Samsung Mid-Range Foldable Phones: Affordable Innovation

TrendForce Sources Hint at Samsung's Move to Offer Budget-Friendly Foldables, Following the Footsteps of TECNO and Motorola.

Samsung, a pioneer in foldable smartphones, is poised to potentially revolutionize the market with mid-range foldable phones. The move is strategic, offering more affordable alternatives to consumers.

According to insights from research firm TrendForce, Samsung is considering the launch of mid-range foldable phones in the coming year, as indicated by supply chain sources. While specific details about these devices remain undisclosed, the industry witnessed the introduction of the first mid-range foldable phones in 2023, including the TECNO Phantom V Flip and Motorola RAZR 2023.

Mid-range foldables, such as the TECNO and Motorola models, distinguish themselves from their flagship counterparts by offering more affordable components. These include mid-range processors, the absence of wireless charging and water resistance, modest cover screen sizes, and cameras that may not reach the heights of premium devices. However, these compromises become more acceptable when one considers the budget-friendly price point, such as ₹49,999 for the Motorola RAZR.

Considering these precedents, it is reasonable to assume that future mid-range Galaxy Z Fold or Galaxy Z Flip devices may follow a similar path by making specific compromises to cater to a broader audience and offer a more accessible price point. It’s possible that Samsung may opt for plastic construction, a departure from the premium glass build, to create an affordable Flip or Fold experience.

While the concept of mid-range Galaxy foldable isn’t entirely new, with rumours of a Galaxy Fold FE model surfacing in 2020, it’s essential to remain cautious and not set overly high expectations for their arrival in 2024. Nevertheless, it appears to be the logical progression for Samsung as the company seeks to sustain its market share in the foldable smartphone segment.
