Instagram’s New Privacy Feature: Turn Off Read Receipts

Instagram introduces a read receipts toggle to protect privacy and make dodging awkward messages easier.

Have you ever wished you could read messages on Instagram without feeling obligated to reply? The “seen” status can be a source of social pressure, but Instagram is coming to your rescue. In an announcement made by Adam Mosseri via his broadcast channel, Instagram is now testing the option to disable read receipts, ensuring no more “seen” status for your messages. This feature not only offers convenience for dodging uncomfortable conversations but also protects your privacy.

The ability to turn off read receipts is not entirely new in the world of messaging apps, as WhatsApp has had this feature for a while. It prevents the double ticks from turning blue when a message is read, maintaining your privacy. You can access this option in your Instagram settings, specifically under Privacy and Safety, complementing the existing Vanish mode that makes seen messages disappear.

It’s worth noting that Instagram’s adoption of this feature may have been overdue, but it’s a welcome addition. Another feature Instagram could consider in the future is the ability to archive chats, allowing users to declutter their DM section and focus on the most important conversations.

Recently, Instagram also introduced the option to add song lyrics to Reels, enhancing user engagement. The release date for the option to turn off read receipts remains unknown, but we’ll keep you updated on any developments.
