A Comprehensive Guide to Google Pixel 9 – Rumors, Features, and What to Expect!

The Google Pixel 8 made its debut last October, and already, the tech sphere is buzzing with speculations about Google’s next move in 2024. Let’s delve into the details and explore everything that has surfaced about the much-anticipated Pixel 9.

Google Pixel 9 Rumors

As the Google Pixel series strides confidently into its 8th generation, the tech giant’s unwavering commitment to its smartphone lineup remains evident. Recent whispers in the tech corridors suggest that Google is gearing up for the release of three models in 2024, with the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro taking centre stage. Notably, a slimmer Pro variant is also in the cards, catering to users who prefer a more compact display without compromising on Pro-level specifications.

Pinning Down the Release Date

Google has a consistent track record of unveiling its Pixel devices in October. Analyzing the release dates of previous models — Pixel 8 (October 4, 2023), Pixel 7 (October 13, 2022), Pixel 6 (October 25, 2021), and Pixel 5 (October 15, 2020) — it’s highly probable that the Pixel 9 will follow suit and hit the market in October 2024.

A Sneak Peek into Pixel 9 Pro’s Design

Although the Pixel 9 series is still on the horizon, leaked renders provide a tantalizing glimpse into the potential design of the Pixel 9 Pro. Renowned leaker OnLeaks has shared alleged renders showcasing a distinctively flat look reminiscent of the new Galaxy S24 Ultra. The camera bar at the back has changed, appearing more compact than its predecessors.

Unravelling the Mystery: Pixel 9 Pro’s Features

According to the leaked information, the Pixel 9 Pro is expected to measure 162.7 x 76.6 x 8.5mm, featuring a smaller 6.5-inch display. This hints at consistency in overall dimensions compared to the Pixel 8 Pro, although the screen size sees a significant reduction. The primary camera sensor in the leaked renders appears larger, sparking speculation about a potential variable aperture lens, although concrete details about the camera setup are yet to emerge.

Tensor G4: The Powerhouse Behind Pixel 9

Sources reveal that the Tensor G4, Google’s custom chip, will continue the tradition of leveraging Samsung Exynos chips as its foundation. Despite earlier rumours suggesting the development of an entirely custom Tensor SoC codenamed Redondo, based on a TSMC processor node, Google’s internal delays have deferred this plan. The Tensor G4 for the Pixel 9 will now be based on a chip codenamed Zuma Pro, representing a more modest upgrade than initially envisioned.

Screen Sizes and Display Details

Apart from the chipset, insights into the screen sizes of the Pixel 9 series have surfaced. The standard Pixel 9 is expected to boast a 6.17-inch display, while the Pixel 9 Pro, contrary to expectations, may feature a 6.5-inch screen according to leaked renders. Display sizes across the entire Pixel 9 lineup, including the 9a and Fold 2, are anticipated to surpass last year’s models, as indicated by Ross Young.

Predicting Camera Configurations

Analyzing past trends, it’s probable that the base Pixel 9 and Pixel 8 will share similar camera configurations. The Pixel 8 series introduced the Samsung Isocell GN2, a 50MP shooter with notable improvements. It’s likely the Pixel 9 series will retain this main camera, although uncertainties surround the fate of the ultrawide lens on the base Pixel 9. The Pixel 9 Pro series remains a wildcard, with expectations of improvements to either the ultrawide or telephoto lens, if not both.

Selfie Camera Upgrade?

Considering Google’s tendency to upgrade, the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro series might see improvements in the selfie camera hardware. The Pixel 8 family retained the Samsung 3J1 (11 MP) sensor from the Pixel 7, signaling a potential upgrade in 2024.

Future-Proofing with Qi2 Wireless Charging

While details about battery, storage sizes, and other aspects remain elusive, the Wireless Power Consortium’s certification of the Qi2 wireless charging standard suggests compatibility with the Pixel 9 series. With a senior Google Hardware engineer actively involved in developing next-gen wireless charging platforms, the Pixel 9 could embrace this cutting-edge technology.

Price: Balancing Affordability and Innovation

Google has positioned itself as a more budget-friendly alternative to flagship smartphones, but the price hikes witnessed with the Pixel 8 series raise questions about the Pixel 9’s cost. Although specific figures are yet to surface, a pricing range of ₹79,999/₹1,29,999, akin to the Pixel 8 series, seems plausible. Google’s ability to strike a balance between innovation and affordability will be closely watched.

To Wait or Not to Wait

With the Pixel 9 still months away, the decision to wait depends on your current smartphone and preferences. If you own a relatively new phone, waiting until October may be worthwhile, especially if you’re intrigued by the prospect of a smaller Pixel Pro variant. However, if you’re using an ageing handset in need of an upgrade, there’s little reason to delay. While the Pixel 9 promises advancements, alternatives like the Galaxy S23 or S23 Ultra might be worth exploring for those seeking immediate gratification.
